Crosswalk this Way is a light installation originally commissioned by Destination NSW for exhibition in Vivid Sydney 2022 at Circular Quay.

Vivid Sydney 2022 had a massive 2.58 million people attend the event over its 23 day run, eclipsing the 2019 festival by 7.5% when the festival was last held.

It was an incredibly fun project to work on and attracted a lot of crowd interaction which was quite joyous to see after a sombre two years!

Artwork description:
Covid has taught us is that sometimes there are better ways of doing things. Sometimes we need to be snapped out of our routines and encouraged to find an alternate route. Through the use of a familiar pedestrian crosswalk light we reimagined the familiar “don’t walk/ walk” instructions of pedestrian crosswalk's to introduce new suggestions are much more fun.

Try these out:

  • Wheelchair Stop/ Wheelchair Go

  • Walk/ Run

  • Stand/ Dance

  • Stand/ Hug

  • Hold Hands/ Kiss

  • Cry/ Laugh

  • Squat/ Jump

  • Stress/ Breathe

  • Wait/ Dream

  • Speak/ Listen

The symbol sets use a call to action to tap into universal human emotions to highlight shared experiences across a diverse spectrum of people.

Where the original pedestrian crossing lights seek to create order, we seek to create a little chaos to spark interactions between strangers, to create moments of joy and laughter amongst friends and to enliven the city for all its inhabitants. Crosswalk this Way… is an invitation to play up, have fun and be human.
